Stress and Adjustment Disorder

Most of us experience stress as a result of change - particularly when that change is negative, like losing a relationship or your job. For some people, the experience of stress is caused by a busy lifestyle with many demands.

Learning to manage stress properly is a key determinant in how successful you can be in life, and teaching skills for stress management is a key feature of my work with most of my clients.

At the extreme end of the spectrum, you may be experiencing stress so intensely that you are no longer able to function in other area/s of your life.  Your stress may be affecting you more than it would another person in a similar situation. Not coping well at this level is termed 'adjustment disorder' in psychological language.

You may have adjustment disorder if:

You have experienced a stressor in the last three months (can be positive or negative stress, e.g. wedding, buying a house, losing a job, death of someone you know, relationship break-down).

The way you're coping with the stressor is affecting other areas of your life (e.g. performance at work is dropping, impacts on your other relationships), and

Your stress levels are higher than would be expected from others in a similar situation.

Adjustment disorder can be difficult to self-diagnose. It's important to seek the opinion of your GP or a psychologist if you think you may have adjustment disorder.
Often people develop an adjustment disorder which is left untreated and becomes Anxiety or Depression. For more information about what is Anxiety, or what the signs and symptoms of Depression are, click on the relevant link below.
